for older woman without a husband.
A kind of charity and protection.
The Jordaan has a high concentration
of courtyards,
many of them with restored houses
and peaceful gardens. Some of them are closed
to the public, and only open their gate on
special days called 'open monuments days'.
But if you do come across one of the entrances,
and it is unlocked, most residents won't mind
if you sneak a quiet peek.
So when you virtually visited all the
courtyards,
shut down the computer, open your door, get a
bike, train, or plane and discover the real world.
