City Wall, bulwarks and gates of Amsterdam

In 1663 Amsterdam was quite enclosed by a five meter high city wall. The wall with 8 gates and 26 bulwarks served as a defense against enemies, and was surrounded by the sixty meter wide canal the Singel. In the 19th century the wall and bulwarks lost their military function. Because of urban expansion, they were broken down.
