Hidden Churches

After the reformation, the 'alteratie' 1578, Catholic churches in the Netherlands were forbidden any outward appearance of a Catholic Church. Therefore, people had to worship in “hidden” churches within houses.

Sint Franciscus Xaverius church, a monument called Krijtberg, Singel 446-448,
used to be a hidden Jesuit church, founded in 1654.
The church was replaced in 1881-1883 by a church with octagonal towers designed by architect Alfred Tepe
