Medieval monasteries in Amsterdam

Medieval Amsterdam between the Singel Canal, the Kloveniersburgwal and the Geldersekade counted 21 monasteries, of which 19 were within the city walls. Most monasteries were intended for nuns: there were only three monasteries for men. The Agnietenkapel is one of the best preserved monastery chapels. The gate with the inscription Brakke Grond can be found on the OZ Voorburgwal between 290 and 298. In the Middle Ages this was a gateway to the Margaret monastery.
